We were happy to welcome a family of 7 to stay with us for a month or so. Granted, they were barn swallows so they didn’t take up much space and they caught all their own food. The barn swallow nest was a source of enjoyment for all of us.
Scoping out the nest site
Showing Mama the great new house
Congratulations! Mama and Papa barn swallows welcomed 5 babies.
The babies are hungry
Waiting for Mama
The nest is constructed mostly of mud and grass
Mama and Papa are nearby with some food
It’s getting a little crowded in here
The crowding situation is becoming more perilous every day
Crowded but waiting patiently for food
This is getting ridiculous
Here comes the food!
The home quarters are not only cramped, but also a trifle disgusting
How do they know whose turn it is to eat?
Barn swallows can eat about 60 bugs every hour. I hope those are mosquitoes!
Both parents share the feeding duties
A day after they first left the nest, baby barn swallows congregate on a nearby windowsill
