Kids with Down Syndrome have Super Skills

When Kyle was a baby, my husband and I watched the documentary Discovery: Pathways to Better Speech for Children with Down Syndrome. We were astonished at one point where a very young boy with Down syndrome looks through a book of animals and does a sign language sign for each animal. Our two older typical children had never even had that skill–it amazed us that a child with Down syndrome could learn and demonstrate it. Since then we have met and read about countless children with Down syndrome who know hundreds of signs.

Our own son continues to amaze us, and not just by our own teaching. It really does take a village, and Kyle has learned many of his new skills at school. I posted a few on the blog facebook page, but I thought it would be nice to assemble some here too. I am encouraged by how people who watch the videos have much the same reaction as I did when Kyle was a baby. Children with Down syndrome are not just capable, they are super stars!
